I *think* I get at what your asking. Using the Hermes isn't the only solution. You could use a Prism card. Both require drivers, though it depends on what linux distro you use if there already compiled into the kernel. So if you are looking for hardware compatibility Hermes, and Prism chipsets are probably your best bet.
