I got an IPaq 3835 (200 mhz cpu with 64 megs ram has an sd slot) and spent the money for the extended battery sleave with pcmcia slot for a gold card.

also got the nessary cables to link it into a GPS, and allow it to run off the car power while driving. I know I can do more with the Ipaq and I do... I am going to get a new Dell Axion X50 V series for work but this is what I primarily use for stumbling since I can carry everything I need in a small lunch box.

Like Thorn pointed out.. if you just want to stumble.. you can get a cheazy pda that will do that. Its when you want to do more with it, thats when you need a better unit.

I have spoken to a few stumblers who use low end laptops (200-300 mhz) with 64-128 meg ram on 3-4 gig drives as their stumling rigs... makes more sense to use something less expensive to harvest the AP's then risk a high dollar laptop.
