actually, what I was intending on proposing wasn't hanging an ipaq from the balloon, it was getting something high enough in the air that could boost any signal it was picking up and rebroadcast it such that you could pick it up.

Same sort of concept as the nocat.net fella did with the two pringles cans + nics, battery on the side of the mountain to bridge his house to his office.

You could probably setup a pringles can antenna on a large mountain somewhere and slowly turn it to stumble across APs. However you'd miss out on the GPS coordinates that way.
