I have one of the ubiquiti wireless cards you are talking about but I do not use it in a laptop. Although it is a truly great card it was very expensive and I found the external antenna thing a little annoying for everyday use.

I am even having trouble hooking up to public wireless spots at my favorite lunchtime eatery INSIDE their establishment. It is a little frustrating.
It sounds like your wireless card could just be a little bunky.Your laptop probably has built in antennas that connect to you current broadcom mini pci wireless card. You will want to check this! If you do have an internal antenna, I would recommend a Wistron CM9 if you are looking for a replacement.
