If you say : It sounds like your wireless card could just be a little bunky.Your laptop probably has built in antennas that connect to you current broadcom mini pci wireless card. You will want to check this! If you do have an internal antenna, I would recommend a Wistron CM9 if you are looking for a replacement.

After doing some mod's of antenna's in laptops I've found that many of the antenna's are mounted to the metal support bracket of the LCD. Which of course is not a good idea since the metal has a nasty tendency of interfering with the antenna.
What I did in my Gateway 600YGR was use thin double sided tape to mount the antenna below the metal bracket directly onto the plastic of the lid so the antenna is effectively behind and outside the bracket, and I've been getting excellent reception.
If I can find the time amongst harddrives failing in my servers and handholding the SCADA guys so they don't screw up my plant I'll see if I can take some pictures of it.
