Since I already had a laptop at my disposal, my choice was already made for me...
BUT, if I had it to do all over again, I'd definately go with the iPAQ. Just from the conveniance and concealibility standpoint. If memory serves correct, the iPAQ uses Winders CE, and all you really need is the PCMCIA cradle and a wireless card and you're pretty good to go.
As for a larger antenna, well, again, that depends on your application. If you're in an environment where you can walk and get to just about any area (or close to), like a college campus, or down town in a major metro area, then personally, I doubt if I'd go for the big ears.
However, if you're anything like me and you spend a lot of time driving, then maybe a good omni yagi is what you need. And if you're a dumbass like me and don't understand the math behind building antennae, then you may want to do some research and find a commersial version.
But, yet again, it's all personal requirements.
