Being lucky enough to have both for my business I find I use the iPAQ more than the laptop for stumbling due to ease of use and convenience however if you want to go serious and do penetration testing and vulnerability assesment (all with the permission of the network admin of course) you will need the laptop to do it properly.
As far as antenna's go I have a mag mount omni for the car and a omni-blade with velcro for walking.
