I utilized a Compaq WL110 and drove from Downtown DSM to my home in West Des Moines, approximately 8 miles. I located 26 different APs. Upon taking I-35 North, the curve from the West Side, from the 235/80 cross section to 86th Street (The Carmike Theater exit) - I located 17 different APs around the associated business parks. All in all, I've found dozens and dozens without hardly getting off the interstate, almost all without WEP.
I wouldn't have even bothered to of checked SE 14, no one in Des Moines actually ventures towards the South Side. It's the part of the city the decent folk don't talk about. I'd be surprised if any of the residence actually own color TVs, let alone, wireless access points.
