I have an IBM 240X laptop with Windows XP Pro and a Linksys WPC11 2.5 wi-fi pc-card.

I installed netstumbler and the following things happened:

The first time I installed I received an error message about not being to overwrite a certain file (sorry, no install log available). I unloaded the Linksys software from memory (and AVG antivirus) and reinstalled, this time without problems.

I loaded the program and it showed me my MAC address and a connection graph. It shows two devices:

Instant Wireless Network PC Card V2.5 Prism 2, and
Instant Wireless Network PC Card V2.5 NDIS 5.1

Although I could see a graph showing I was connected, I was unable to browse the internet. I decided to restart my system.

At this point, I noticed the following: I had Stand-By and Hybernate options available from my Shutdown menu. These options had been unavailable and I haven't been able to figure why I cannot set my laptop on Stand-By. Anyway, now Stand-By worked - I tried it.

I rebooted the computer and now NetStumbler could not detect a valid card and the Stand-By and Hibernate options were gone from my Shutdown menu.

I removed the Linksys software and reinstalled the card drivers. The laptop connected to the network and NetStumbler could again see a valid card and show a connection graph.

Any comments?

Any ideas as to why I'm unable to activate the Stand-By and Hibernate functions on my laptop?

Which wi-fi card would you recommend for use with Windows XP and netstumbling software? Would you recommend a laptop with an embeded wi-fi system or is an external (PC Card) system better?

I've noticed that most stumbling programs do not support Linksys cards.
