With XP you can format a floppy disk and make it a bootable DOS disk.[place floppy in drive A, right click, select format, and one of the options allows the selection....]
The bootdisk from slackware site is only to boot and start the install process.
The boodisk from the MS site is only to start the install process for XP.
You may also want to check the boot order in the bios.... [I know I usually set the ones I setup to boot from the harddisk first; speeds bootup process a little, and is a very basic anti-virus prevention method {if you accidentally start the machine with an infected floppy])
