GPS/serial/XP: works fine
I use my Garmin Emap via serial port w/o any problems on both my desktop/XP and my Sony Vaio notebook/XP. However, I and several others have experienced the small annoyance of XP seeing the GPS as a pen tablet pointing device. To avoid this, always have the GPS connected to the serial port, turned on and a GPS lock acquired before you boot the computer. The goal is to have an active GPS data stream present at the serial port when XP boots.
A sure indicator of XP having incorrectly identified your GPS as a pen tablet is that the cursor will behave erratically and your current pointing device will not respond to inputs. About all you can do is force the system to shutdown, disconnect the GPS, restart and remove the pen tablet pointing device from device manager. Shut the system back down; reconnect the GPS, acquire a GPS lock then turn the system back on again.
I'm sure there are other methods around this but, I'm simply sharing my experience and what works for me.
