If it is working in Kismet, you will know it. In between frames you will see your current coordinates and what satellite lock you have, if any. If GPS does not work, this will not be there, and Kismet will not create the kismet.gps file.
As for GPSdrive, last time I ran it I thought there was some sort of permissions issue I ran into. Something that wanted root access to function properly, because when I su'd to root and ran gpsdrive it became automagically happy. Maybe it was permissions on the device the unit was on? .. not sure because I didn't bother following through.. I never really did like it much though... so I junked it and stayed with gpsd.
