The PCI card on your desktop might not work under Linux. Linksys changed the chipset in v2.7 of the WMP11 (to Broadcom I believe...) it's unsupported.

As for the kernel issue, it's really not too difficult if you take your time and read all the "help" docs, and it's well worth it in the long run.
