You probably need to uncomment a few lines in /etc/wireless.opts. Mine has something like this:

*,*,*,00:02:2D:*)
INFO="home AP"
ESSID="wireless"
MODE="Managed"
# CHANNEL="11"
# RATE="auto"
KEY="01234567890123456789ABCDEF"
;;

This is for use with wireless extensions.
