This is my work around (for I too despise the XP client manager, especially after the upgrade to SP1).

Go to the network control panel and uncheck "allow windows to configure..."

Go to Start -> All Programs -> Orinoco/Wireless -> Wireless Network Settings (provided that you've installed the software) and create your connection profile.

Launch the client manager.

Your resulsts may vary.
