I've yet to see anything in Linux work "right out of the box." there is always at least one thing to configure, and usually a dozen or so. While the configurabilty of Linux down to the bit level is one of it's greatest attractions, it can also drive you nuts if you are trying something new.
Like peekitty said, take a look at minicom and setserial, and brush up on your RS-232 protocols.
