Does anyone know if hooking up a GPS to a serial Y-Cable would work?

I am not sure if MiniStumbler/Netstumbler is passively listening to GPS coordinates, or if it is sending requests to the GPS unit.

If a Y-Cable would work, then you can hook up the GPS to the Y-Cable, then have either two laptops or a laptop and a PocketPC.
