If you do use an ORiNOCO at both ends you should be fairly confident of link RF levels. In my experience it's always been very close.

If the signals are what you expect, but you're still experiencing packet loss, then you should check for FZ, other possible interference, antenna polarity, etc. Make sure the path is what you're expecting. If possible, you might even want to visually check the link at the antenna level for anything unexpected, such as power lines. I know of one person having set up such a link, found that there was a 19kv high-voltage line right in the path. It was twisting the signal about 45º out of phase. He was able to get a high RSSI, but the packet loss was high, until he canted his antenna over.
