This is probably because the built-in wireless card you have has the internal antennas in the laptop's lid.
Now, compare this to the two small metal L-shaped things used in the Orinoco's built-in antenna. Obviously, the antennas built into your laptop would be much better.
Buy yourself a nice mag-mount omnidirectional antenna from Fab-corp and you'll be able to find more APs.
