If this is an XP installation (Like I suspect.) the problem is deriving from the fact that when NS 0.4 starts up (and while it is running) Xp's "Wireless Zero Configuration" is turned off (By NS), that is why you wouldn't get the little ballon in the corner telling you there is wireless networks to connect to. This is normal for NS 0.4, and when you close NS it turns your WZC back on.
