Two publications come to mind authored by some of the best that happen to be members of these forums:
Jeff Duntemann's Drive-by Wi-Fi Guide (now with a second edition)
Wardriving: Drive, Detect, Defend
These guys know their stuff, highly recommended. Renderman and Thorn both have information available on their sites and audit has done an excellent job on MichiganWireless.org.
The FAQ's here are also a good source of information.
