After a few feet, the signal loss due to natural resistance from the cable run would reduce your signal output to the point of being almost useless. To overcome this you would need a radio/repeater/bridge inbetween your network and antenna. The closer to your antenna the better.
Your PC card will not have enough power to use a commercial grade omni directional antenna with any real distance.
