I wonder how reliable that suction cup is.... The wise and antenna has certain weight, and it experiences also the wind stress. Add also shocks and vibration generated by the driving.

Suction cups works only if there is no leakage of air under the cup itself. How one can be sure that it holds for hours under driving conditions? I trust magnetic mounting much more, it has not such a "leakage problem."

the suction cup is a vice grip suction cup so it should hold up to 200-300 pounds, so it can handle the wind resistant. i drove around with a 8db omni on one for a few days topped out at like 70mph never gave me a problem.

I belive that it can initially carry 200-300 pounds, it is the atmospheric pressure which pushes it down--but what happens if (when!) there is small leakage letting some air enter under it? Just some dirt or slight scratch or a hair between the wise and car roof may be sufficient to loosen the suction over some time. And the mechanical stress makes it worse!

So, be careful and have at least a "safety string" in addition so that your antenna is not suddenly hanging on its cable (which may break/loosen from the connector).

I went out and got one of these at Home Depot. I highly recommend it. It withstood speeds in excess of 80 mph and rough roads for hours. I just wish I'd gone ahead and done this before the DefCon wardrive...

BTW The suction works by pulling up a plastic base while still pushing down at the edges. It doesn't seem to sensitive to small flaws.

I just went home to pick up the fab-corp 5dbi mag mount that I had ordered. I hooked it up for my 10 minute drive back to work and picked up 54 APs. Very cool. :)
