Access Point w/ built in RJ11 ??

Postby vindy80 » Mon Jan 06, 2003 12:59 pm

Hey Guys...was wondering if there was any other cheaper Access Point besides the Orinoco which has a built-in RJ11 port for a dial up modem ? I was trying to share my dial up Internet b/w my PC and my laptop. My laptop running WinXP has a built-in wireless card, so I would not need to get another wireless card right even in case if I changed the OS on the machine. Please advice.

Thanks,
Big B:(

The only one I can think of is the new Apple AirPort 2.
A good way to threaten somebody is to light a stick of dynamite.
Then you call the guy and hold the burning fuse up to the phone.
"Hear that?" you say. "That's dynamite, baby." -Jack Handey

My dlink 704 (older one) has a serial port on it and I have an external us robotics 56k modem hooked up to it and it works great (accept for my cheesy ISP that is)

Hey Gmiller, thanks for the reply buddy. But as you said your dlink, does that have an ethernet port as well...so i was thinking of hooking that up to a hub/switch and share the serial port or the RJ11 for sharing internet. Also could you tell me how much you bought it for ? Thanks for your feedback.

It is a 4 port switch with a WAN port (for when you get broadband). I bought mine a year and a half ago and it cost me 90 bucks (after the rebate!!!). I saw them down to like 50 about a year ago. Here is a link to one on ebay. I don't know how much you'll be able to get them for now but they should be pretty cheap. You can set it to auto dial so that it is always on. Pretty neat.

Hey Miller,
This would seem to work great for me. Do you think this will also allow my laptop to share my Dial up internet w/ my PC as well ? I wanted to be wireless w/ my laptop since it has the built in wireless card. So do you know if the Dlink router also will be capable of acting as an Access Point as well and I could access the internet by being wireless. Please lemme knw.
And just FYI...the DLink router is discontinued but i could get it from online...so not a biggie.

Thanks,
Big B

You could connect an AP to the router (as I do) and it will work just fine.

Siemens also makes a product with 802.11 & ISDN or RJ11.
It's called an Igate.

Check their Homepage for more Info.

D-Link's DWL-900AP+ would be a perfect AP to connect to the 704 for a wireless network. It is very versitile with 5 modes of operation and with those modes can be an AP, wireless client for anything that is Ethernet enabled or a repeater to extend your wireless signal (D-Link equipment only though).

I've played around with it and it has proven great in my tests and my buddy has it hooked up and running all the time.
