Access Points on the move ?

Postby RufusG » Sat Aug 31, 2002 9:15 am

While driving around London, England recently (magmount external antenna ) I stumbled across 3 mobile contacts:

- 2 were showing Green lights along a 10 mile stretch of Motorway. ( M25 from M40->M4 )
- 1 was near a speed camera on A40 near Swakeleys junction

My fertile imagination immediately thought of WiFi links along motorways or using WiFi to download the pictures from the Gatso roadside speedtrap camera.

When I re-traced my route they were no longer there.

So what I thought were interesting use of Wireless were probably other Stumblers, or trucks using WiFi for communication
( like CB Truck-Truck, or to maybe Truck-SuperMarket )

Any suggestions or inside information ?

In San Diego the UCSD busses have APs on them, so it's being done.

Are you sure they were Access Points, or ad-hoc laptops? I've seen this on the highway as well. Today in Red Deer we enounted 8 "AP's" with the same SSID, all using WEP... but when we mapped... nothing... on later inspection we found they were "ad-hocs", and my thoughts point to the construction company building that neighbourhood...
