Configure WLAN Adapter as AP?

Postby Zima_Drinker » Wed Jun 19, 2002 10:22 am

Pardon the ignorant question, I'm a newbie. Is there a way to configure an ORiNOCO Gold card to look like an Access POINT? One large security concern my boss has is that somebody can come in, pretend to be an AP and get clients to connect to him. (In other words, how secure is the 802.11 client itself, not the network via the AP?). Also, are there any peer-to-peer concerns about 802.11?

Thanks in advance.

hi

i posted some regestrystrings, sometime ago, to set an orinoco card into AP mode.

(use the search button to find it)

but, if you have an software AP in your building and some computers should connect to him there is still one problem.
the clients do always connect to the AP with the strongest signal.
so you have only to take care that your real AP´s are powerful enough.

the only way, i know at the moment, to protect your WLAN against intruders (even AP´s simulations) is to use IPsec.

A lot of those older postings are no longer available - you might want to post it a second time - if there's sufficient interest.

yes, there is interest! I would like to know the configuration strings for the regestry, too. hope that someone can post them or link them in here.

thx
