How is 802.11a security "better"?

Postby WitchDr » Sun Sep 22, 2002 8:56 am

Can anyone tell me what the "enhanced" security features are in 802.11a other than it being on a different frequency? I can't seem to find anything different. It still uses WEP, still uses the 802.11 protocol, etc...

Nothing really, other than 99.999% of the wireless ethernet world is on 802.11b and can't see it because it is on a different band.

also, since it is newer you will usually see it with a more secure WEP implementation such as most vendors have implemented 1n their more recent 802.11b software (i.e. eliminating weak IV's)

don't forget the shorter distances due to the higher frequency :)

These are all neat but it's not really any more improved than 802.11b yet I see boxes of these things advertising "improved security". I guess WEP+ is "improved". I got the same "improvement" with the new Orinoco firmware. So if I go to X band...is that "improved" security?

perhaps by improvement they mean "currently immune to attacks on proven systems" ... of course until it has been out for a while... ;)
