interesting stumblement phenomena

couple of strange stumbles for you:

1: an incidence of multiple instances of an AP with the same SSID and long / lat same channel but ever changing MACs - i have got upto 15 or so recurrent collections! (and ppl b4 flaming it's in the UK - no Sears here! don't think we have had a satisfactory explanation)

a thought could this be a multi 802.11b type technology to deliver more bandwisth - the card i am using is only 11Mbits

2: a D-Link 714p+ (guess it's close to home ;) ) with WEP128, mac filtering and SSID broadcast disabled appears (MAC only) but flashes on and off every second or so. the mac address of the WLAN adaptor is not authorised this appears to be intermittent - sometimes the AP can't be seen someties not - another interesting anomaly is that when the AP is visible an authorised WLAN card can see the AP from 50yds down the road but an unauthorised one has to be within about 30ft!

any light thrown would be appreciated

B

setup :

Cpaq evo n160 XP, netS, NDIS, pretec GPS

I have seen the same thing in Germany...

1 Large Hotel Chain, had like 20 AP's.
The difference was that all 20 were changing CHANNEL
every 2 Seconds. All were from the same Manufactur (3COM)
or one of the 3Com copy companies.

I posted this many many moons ago and never got a good
answer. And before you ask, NO the system is not FHSS Equip.
as NS & the 802.11b cards WILL NOT detect FHSS gear..

Stumble On...

Some 3com gear has an auto channel swap feature, if they get noise on one channel or another AP they switch channel, put the AP's to near each other and they all start hopping, Ive never seen them hopping every 2 seconds though!! Have a look at 3com site for a manual for a 3crwe20096a to get a better explanation.
