Semi Weight Station AP's on Interstates

Postby L8Nighter » Wed Jan 08, 2003 8:26 pm

I noticed while driving down some interstates they have now put up two antennas hanging over the interstate 1/2 before and 1/2 mile after semi truck weight stations. When I drove under them I got excellent signal. It appears they are using these to send information to the weight stations. No WEP and the default Cisco SSID.

I noticed these too as I drove back from Florida to Ohio recently, but I didn't have the laptop powered up. Could they have a beam to detect vehicle height and therefore be sending a signal back to the weigh station that 'a vehicle with height larger than 12' (or whatever) just passed by and is most likely a truck so make sure it stops?

Just what does a truck do at a weigh station? Just get weighed to ensure not running too heavy? Do they have to pay any commercial fees or anything?

We have them at the state lines here. My guess is the trucks have a chip that stores all that info and it gets read by those overhead sensors.

Ours are just as you described...look kinda like an extended streetlight, with a large grid dish at the post pointing down the road to the weigh station. I cannot pick ours up though....could be running some kind of proprietary software for .11b. I've seen those dishes before for .11b, so they can't be running 5.2ghz...
