WEP or NO WEP???

OK, I stumbled across a secure AP but the netstumbler didnt show with a lock icon on it? can anyone here explain? thx a zillion.

Maybe it has some sort of encryption.

uhuh....any better explanation why it didnt show up in netstumbler with the lock icon, btw they have more than one channell set up.

It's probably an open AP outside of their firewall. They are using a VPN tunnel (read encrypted) to get to their network. NetStumbler shows it as an Open AP because it is as far as NetStumbler is concerned. By turning WEP off and encrypting the data elsewhere, you are regaining that bandwidth that was lost due to WEP overhead.

These are my thoughts, you mileage may vary...

BTW: Where abouts in Washington are you? Sifter and I are in Oly.

Could be one of those using proprietary encryption like the 256-bit employed by a few, or could be like the Enterasys which uses external RADIUS authorization. Neither would appear as WEP.

would be nice if NS could display wep level ;) putting in suggeston box.
