1st setup

Hey all, new guy here.........

My 1st Setup and "Test Run"

IBM ThinkPad A22e (800Mhz Celeron, 256MB RAM)
Windows XP Pro
NetStumbler 0.4.0
Deluo USB GPS receiver (purchased in '02 www.deluoelectronics.com)
Netgear MA521 802.11b 2.4 GHz

I hooked it all up on the passenger seat with GPS on the dash and took a drive around my little corner of town and picked up 87 AP's.

39 had Encryption Off
4 had no SSID (no broadcast)
11 did not have the default SSID
Only 1 had a cool SSID: whatareyoudoing
1 might have been an unautherized AP, picked it up in front of a fire engine house, SSID: E-Dsl and it was Encryption Off
NS seems to like the GPS unit, it gave lat/long for all AP's

I did not attempt to 'connect' to any of the AP's but after reading some post here, I did not disadble TCP/IP on my NIC prior to the 'Test Run'. I'll be sure to do that in the future (learning curve on my part).

Back in 2002, I purchased the GPS receiver and Delorme Street Atlas 2003 so I wouldn't get lost during work (I'm a service/support tech and drive a lot). I have loaded the Street Atlas on the laptop but did not have it running during my test. Should I have it running? Does NS work in conjuction with Street Atlas? Please help me with that, a link will be fine. Any questions on my setup I'll be happy to answer.

Thanks.... new guy

Just some FYI...

If NS seen the AP then it was broadcasting.

I was referring to the no SSID from the AP, meaning it was not bradcasting a SSID. Sorry if I didn't use the proper term.

You know us smokers need to smoke while doing 'things'. I did use the floppy to load the GPS driver (it came with the device, so I used it).

I guess the first pic didn't show the USB GPS receiver very well, the zippo was ment to give a size perspective of the device. Heres a better one.

It's not so much the proper term, as it is about about NetStumbler, and true non-broadcast of the SSID.

Due to the way NetStumbler works, if you picked up an AP then it is broadcasting the SSID. If you received a blank SSID then it was just that: On the response to the Probe, the AP returned a null or a blank SSID. But it IS still broadcasting an SSID.

NetStumbler is an "active" scanner. It sends out Broadcast Probes, and records the response. If the received response is a blank, it is still a response. On the other hand, if nothing is received, then nothing is recorded. If an AP is in the proper non-broadcast mode, NS will never see it, as it never reveals itself. You would need a passive (RX only) program such as kismet to see such APs.

APs that truly have the SSID broadcast turned off do not respond to an Broadcast Probe in any way. This is how the majority of APs out there do non-broadcast. Some manufacturers send out a blank SSID in reponse, but it's not the way the non-broadcast function is supposed to work. However, you still occasionally find this. Older Agere/Avaya/ORiNOCO APs with early firmware are especially known to give blank SSIDs, as well as a few other brands.

Thanks for the explanation and it is understood now.

A floppy is something that should not have a magnet placed on top of it
