Access home PC with wireless setup and pocketPC

Once connected to the net via my PocketPC...what kind of server can I run off my home PC that will allow me to use some sort of client on my pocketPC to access it?

que?

do you mean something like remotecontroling your home-pc from within your pocket-pc? if so, i've seen that there is a version of vnc ( http://www.conduits.com/products/apps/vnc.asp ) for the pocket-pc...never used it due to security reasons...

cheers

Please clarify your rational. Once you are the net your home pc would be like another other machine on the net running services.

Basically what I want:

I want, once connected to the net wirelessly (via net stumbler or otherwise) to be able to access my home PC, in the sense of transfering files, perhaps even ideally running programs remotely, etc.

I don't know how to do this.

What type of software were you intending on using, btw, what you are talking about is Networking 101... also if you can access your files && you don't know what you are doing, then chances are I will be able to access your files as well, same with anyone else who happens to run across your box.... I suggest you take a class or read a tut on how to set up your favorite OS to operate as a server on the live internet... the first few times it gets 0wn3d don't hate yourself.. it happens to a lot of people that pop out of a box.... i would suggest that you only have VPN connections with certificate logon... and install ssh on your client box...

Hi,

I've done networking...I have a home network running a few PCs via a linksys router w/dhcp.

Anyway, I'll read up on it, thanks.

Yes, things like transferring files can be done. But those type of activities have little or nothing to do with with wireless setups. Rather that is more "Networking 101". The connections and how it is done are the same whether or not there is a wire.

This thread might help: http://forums.netstumbler.com/showth...&threadid=2950

BTW, NetStumbler does not actually connect you, it just advises you of the presence of an AP.

LOL blackwave,
and hey, be sure to set up your own ca for your certificates, since you cannot trust any official trustcenter..and if you use ssh between your ppc and your desktop, only use aes256...
wow, dude, you are as much more paranoid than i thought...but the question is, is this enough?

cheers

Once I've found my AP, how do I then connect to it?

My uncle, who makes Blackwave look mild on the paranoia level, always says:

"Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not out to get you."

Uh, RTFM. Really, I'm not being funny.

It depends on your brand of card, brand of AP, how you've got the network set up, and what protocol(s) you're running. And as both BW and I have said, it's a "Networking 101" question. Forget the wireless for a moment - How do you connect those other PCs in your home network?

Each PC on my home network is assigned an IP address automatically by my router...

I access them through the basic windows XP networking.

(I'm not a complete newb, sorry if I come across as one).

My setup will soon be:

Casio E-125 pocketpc (owned)
Oronico 802.11b (silver or gold) (yet to be purchased)
PCMCIA-CF adapter (on the way)
Garmin eTrex (owned)

Now, I want to know what pocketPC software I'll need to MAKE the connection. I intend to try it at home before "stumbling" out in the real world.

BTW, IS there a manual or guide to doing this (specifically wireless/netstumbling) because I can't find one.

Thorn's uncle is totally right
and yeah, it's never enough...sometime s when i make recommendations to my customers, they are just smiling at me and say that i'm mad and totaly "uberparanoid"...but i've seen their networks falling down in cause of not following my recommendations...however

yes pki is a nice toy to play with...smartcards, tokens...all those little nice gimmicks..

PS: you got a ssh client for your ipaq wich supports aes256
