A bit of overkill

This is my rig. Yes I know I can get in trouble for having a viewable screen, but as far as I'm concerned, it's for GPS navigation, which is ok. In my state the screen just can't show movies or TV.

The setup:
750W power invertor, with 50A service from the alternator
Shuttle SK41G2, Nforce2
AMD Athlon 2700+
512 MB RAM
120 GB WD HD (SE)
Planar 15" LCD with TouchScreen
Cheapo small keyboard
Orinoco 8480 a,b,g PCI card with remote antenna
DeLorme Earthmate USB GPS
Liteon DVD / CDROM burner combo drive
Onboard audio tied into the main stereo

Software:
Win 2k
Garmin Mapquest (for programming the boat's GPS)
NetStumbler 0.4
Delorme USB-serial driver
Street Atlas 2004
EFI-live OBDII engine management
Windows Media Player with all the codecs I need
Other Misc. utilities

The antenna seems to work well where it is. I'll probably get a better external one later.

Question? I went to look at hte card you have and it says it comes with a 1.5 meter cable for the antenna, but what connection is on the actualy card. Because last time i checked A cards are not allowed to have external antennas . . . any ideas?

It came with that attached "tounge depressor" antenna. The cable goes into the card with no connector. If I replace it, I'd have to cut the cable, and splice in, coaxially. I might lose A reception, but I never use A anyway.

The OEM antenna actually works well. I might rig an external mount, and run it out the window just to get it out of the truck and higher up...or a suction cup mount for inside or outside the rear vent window. Right now, I like the stealth aspect. With the tint, it's hard to see.

Very nice. That's what my wife if for. She can watch the road while I drive and watch the monitor.

How is you earthmate working? I'm having problems with mine timing out or saying "port not available". Have you had anything like that?

When it does say "GSP Listening" it's not recording any data.

Any suggestions?

Check what COM port your GPS is on. The first time I hooked my DeLorme up, Windows said it was COM 9. Netstumbler kept saying GPS Listening and then time out. Once I changed it to COM 2, in both Device Manager and Netstumbler, everything worked fine.

Haven't had a problem since installing the ubs-serial drivers. It won't work if Street Atlas launched first, and vice versa. But, when NS has it, it works and does not lose connection.

Sometimes it takes a long time to get a signal, sometimes it's ready right away. The drivers chose COM6, adn I set NS for that.

If it says "listening", then the GPS doesn't have a lock yet, on one of it's bad days, it can take several minutes for a lock.

1. Are you sure the GPS is working? Try it in another app like street atlas. iow, have you gotten the earthmate to work on the same pc with another app?

I think GPS Listening means that sees the GPS, and it waiting for it to talk. Someitmes it will say Lat 0.000 Lon 0.000, while the gps is trying to get a fix. Then it says Lat X.XXXX Lon Y.YYYY, etc.

It can take a while to get a fix (5 minutes), or happen right away. The first time you try to use the GPS, it could take a half hour to get that first fix. It has to scan all frequencies until it knows where it is, and what the satellite almanac data are.

Also, make sure the GPS has a view of the sky. Try putting it on the roof, just to see if that helps.

That long....OK, I'll have to get it running and leave it alone. It works fine with SA04, but that was in USB mode. I don't think I've tried it since I did the USB/Serial drivers.
