My rig: (pix coming soon)

Kash,
I don't have any pix yet (and I'm still waiting on one part) but here's what I'm running:

iPAQ 3650
WinCE 3.0
Single PCMCIA sleeve
ORiNOCO Gold
MiniStumbler (duh)
vxUtils

waiting on:
Garmin eTrex Legend
and interface cable

Coming soon:
car mount omni-dir. antenna
directional yagi
(both homebrews, so they're just dependant on my free time)

I'll post pix of the full rig when it's all together and functional.

sorry don't have pix yet, but i use:

jornada 568 w/ pcmcia sleeve
ipaq 3650 w/ pcmcia sleeve
dell inspiron 3000 laptop

orinoco gold

royaltek sapphire SiRF2 GPS. the sapphire's power cable powers the handhelds.

homebrew cantenna. looking to build an omni when i have
more time.

would like to get dual boot linux going on the handhelds to run kismet, etc.

the handhelds are attached to the dash via a vent clip from theclip.com. only threw away the button...velcro works better because it doesn't spin.

btw, for you guys using etrex, bear in mind that it only updates once every 2sec in NMEA mode. 1sec updates are only available in Garmin mode, which ministumbler doesn't support. 2sec is ok for stumbling but too much delay if you want to do navigation.

I like it, though I would have changed the tourquise lid to another color or left it clear... ooh or add little led's like on the cell phone...(just kidding, don't want to attract attention do we... [wee wee stumbler coming through...]) but that is minor compared to the functional idea.

I read about the 60 degree directional beam pattern, it looks like it would identify APs ahead of your position, more than lateral to you. I suppose this is the trade-off of a directional and omnidirectional. Perhaps if you has it panning from left to right you could make up for the benefits of an omni and go into a hemi directional mode..

good point about the lid. was thinking of painting it black but then it'll absorb even more heat...it gets hot enough as it is!
from your postings, sounds like you've got quite an arsenal...how about posting some pics?

hey blackwave, do you find that having your laptop plugged into the inverter drains your battery? i have a honda civic and i always leave my lights on, so my battery sucks... i've been thinking about getting a Y splitter for my cig though so i can do the same thing you got going on in your setup. i think i just might have to plug my car into the trickle charger every night...

I haven't noticed any significant hit with my battery, usually I am driving if I got anything on so the alternator takes all the drain, but it is pretty decent, hasn't burnt on me yet. I have a Y splitter for the inverter and for the GPS charger. Works fine... Hell I used to have a 3 y splitters all plugged in with handheld ham radios, frequency scanners, frequency meters, cell chargers and all worked out well.. of course it was a rental.. but I also carry an external jumper battery in case something does die on me... I would suggest for anyone to invest in an external battery jumper... mine can jumstart a large truck.. also makes it easier when someone asks you for a jump.

I wouldn't suggest sitting there parked and plugged int... that will drain your battery fast, especially if your laptop battery is dead... and check you battery every once in a while to make sure it isn't dry. (unless it is supposed to be)

Talking

Orinco Gold
Cisco Arionet 350
Hyperlink custom nmale pigtails
Hyperlink 14.5db cannon antenna
Hyperlink 3.5 db mobile atenna

I am just learning the wireless stuff after 18 years of networking
CNX, Cisco, protocol analyzers etc... I always loved the wirless stuff but I waited for the products to mature. I remember back in 1997 I almost purchased the Nortel 1mbs cards for $400.00. I am glad I did'nt.

Now all I need is a large dish atenna on my roof so I can go to the beach, which is 8 miles from my home, and access my Cisco lab from the beach. This way I can have a summer and prepare for my CCIE as well. Any suggestions???

Why not just buy a big roll of single-mode fiber with armor coating and suspension cable in the jacket?

Spool it out on the way to the beach and run gigabit.

Then set up some bikini-cams and post the URL where we can watch the show.
