jsicuran,
I see you're in NYC. You might want to check out www.nycwireless.net. They provide free wireless access there. It might cover the beach. Cheers,

Thanks for replying to my first post fellas. I am learning a lot from you guys.
Mr. Thorn, the NYCwireless does not have anything near Jones Beach. Thanks for the link though, man... Manhattan is littered. Mr. TIntruder(I pity the fool) As for running the cable, I like that. I will check on any of the bankruptcy sales of former dot bombs and CLECs for cheap bulk fiber cable. Maybe I can string it on the poles down to the beach, LIPA won’t mind. Either way maybe I can start a web site called www.beachbugumeba.cam. If someone actually tries this link and gets something then I have seen it all. Forget a buck... 50 cents… Have a great holiday….

Drive something obscure?
Nice page. I like your setup, but I think you have a typo in there.
I wouldn't drive anything "obscure". I take "obscure" to mean, unique, or out of the ordinary. I think you want to drive something that blends in and doesn't attract attention ie something plain and average and common. I have a vintage car and I don't like to stumble with it because it attracts attention. I find that things like Hondas or a ford taurus or something would be much better. No one is gonna think twice about ANOTHER beige Honda Accord parked in front of their place. The part about leaving friends at home is a decent enoughidea, but I find that the most efficient work is done with one guy worrying about car-driving and one guy worrying about war-driving. I don't do either one well if I do both. |

lullabud - The reason I put that buddy point in there...my friends drive me nuts. Anyway, one of the next stumbling projects I'm considering is a rotatable parabolic antenna for the roof rack...but for more specialty stumbles than anything else. I haven't decided the best way to design it or even hide the thing. Most antenna rotators are slow as molasses too. I considered mounting it in the back ("Jackal" style), but the steel frame of the truck might do more harm than good in that case. The greater intent of the antenna is for security audit purposes.

I have also checked out this thread where you spoke about SiRF and NMEA but I could not gather for sure whether this particular model would work or not??

well, u can rest assured that the RGM-2000 works with NS because that's what i use! fortunately, NS supports NMEA 2.2.
there are just a few extra optional fields in some of the NMEA sentences, and marius seems to handle them right. it can actually output a lot more different NMEA sentences but the 4 they list are really all you need for most applications. what's nice about SiRF-II-based GPS's is besides the great hot start/cold start/reacquire times, they're extremely programmable via a free utility from SiRF. you can change the baud rate, enable/disable individual sentences, choose sentence output frequency (per sentence!), etc. they also have a nice dead reckoning mode where you can have it assume the last good velocity/heading for a few seconds after it loses signal...nice for when you're driving under a bridge or a short tunnel. as for SiRF binary mode, that's just their proprietary mode...kind of like Garmin protocol or Rockwell Binary protocol. There's lots of interesting stuff you can get at in SiRF mode that's not available in NMEA mode for probing the inner workings of the GPS, but that s mostly useful for hacking...most software just wants to see NMEA.
