Question Firewalls and IP's

Just a quick question or two on your setups.
1) does anyone use a firewall whilst stumbling? is there any pros and cons?
2) is windows set up to recieve an IP address from the AP (or server behind it) that you connect to or can it be manually set.

Sorry if this seems especially lame or has appeared before but, as Aristotle said, to become virtuous requires constent committing of virtuous acts. By becoming virtuous you can be happy, this being the goal of human life. There's more but I best stop when I'm ahead.

Cheers,

First I used to use ZoneAlarm, but because ZA phones home to make sure the license is valid, I no longer do. Since my stumbling box is anonymous as possible I think it should be cool. Otherwise if I find out there are more personalizing issues I will make sure that I find more cautious meaures such as spoofing the mac continously. I have my xp box hardened through using the security configurations suggested by the NSA
http://nsa2.www.conxion.com/
http://nsa2.www.conxion.com/win2k/download.htm
... and all my server services are disabled, so the only thing that is squeaking through for stumbling is the search for 'any' broadcast.
...
I also am always looking for more suggestions.

1) Yes - ZoneAlarm Pro is ALWAYS running on my laptop.
2) DHCP is enabled, so the laptop will request an IP if a DHCP responds to it's DHCP request.

Pros & Cons - from my point of view - none, but I'm sure someone out there disagrees

I guess I wont be using that then. Would that account for why XP always does a memory dump before rudely restarting whenever I use it? And no, my license isn't exactly valid... But close enough

Thanks for those links, I'll check them out.

Nope - I'm running ZA Pro on XP - without any problems whatsoever - do I have a valid license? Depends ... what do you mean by valid license?

I never noticed that phone home thing though - I'll setup Sniffer and take a peek.

Sounds like your license is like mine. It is a valid license in the eyes of ZA pro but maybe not in those of Zonelabs.

If ZA does phone home then no body hould be using it when war driving/stumbling as it will make your presence amazingly obvious.
