First time out
Wow!
My first time trying this, I headed home from work with my laptop and a 3Com XJack card stumbling away. No extra/external antenna!!! I got 3 different MACs before I even got out of the parking lot! All with WEP enabled (There's a change based on what i have read around here!) By the time I got home, 15 minutes later I had stumbled on 10 more, 7 of them without WEP. One apartment complex scored me 4 different APs, just driving by!! My wife thinks I'm a geek, ok, she knew I was a geek, I'm just not doing anything to change her mind. This is cool! I bought the 3Com card as part of a proof of concept project for my boss, I guess I need to convince him that the Orinoco is the way to go for production!!! Why spend my own money when the company will pay for something I can play with! |

I have the 3com X-Jack setup in my work laptop since I travel all the time. It's a good idea since you can retract the antenna, but unfortunately, the reception on the thing is horrible.
I am using an SMC or Orinoco Gold card in my personal laptop and they seem to get better reception. |

Xjack
Do you have trouble getting it to stay retracted? I usually have to try 5 or 6 times to get it to stay 'in'....
No pics yet... I've got a linksys card I can try next week, see if it is compatible and if it works any better. |

Wait a min. I thought that the X-Jack card was not compatible with NS?
I actually never tried it (i don't have NS installed on my work laptop) but I thought I read somewhere it wasn't the right type of card. I may be mistaken, however. |

jblewis,
Just out of curosity, did you flash the firmware or do anything special to your X-Jack 3com pcmcia card? I installed Netstumbler on my laptop with the 3com X-Jack card and NS says there is no PC Card detected. I always thought the X-Jack neverworked, but if there is a trick , I'd love to know. Thanks! |

Actually, No... Sorry, I just took it out of the box and a plugged it in..
I had three cards at my disposal, an Air352, an MA401 and the X-Jack (62092B)... The xjack was the only card that worked... All three get recognized and the MA401 shows up with both NDIS and Prism drivers(?) in NS. but neither show signal when in range of a known source. I haven't tried downloading and installing the prism reference drivers for MA401 yet however... Busy with other stuff right now. |
