FLECOM's stumbling setup.

It seems that every time I finally get some pictures of my setup, I change something, but alas, it is time to show off a bit of my hard work

This is my vehicle, or as my friends jokingly call it, the "CAM9000"

http://flecom.fragmachines.com/cam90...1_filtered.jpg

On the left is a MFJ1412 2m/440MHz dual band antenna from MFJ (1/2 Wave, 3 dB gain on 2 Meters, 5/8 Wave, 5.5 dB gain on 440 MHz.) On the left is my 2.4ghz antenna, it is an Antenna Specialists ASPT2976 2400-2500MHz 8dB omni directional antenna.

The 2m/400MHz antenna is on a SO239 lip mount and the 2.4 antenna has an integrated female bulkhead connector which goes through the rubber mount where the car radio antenna was.

Behind the metal on the left would be the bottom of the N female connector, which has a 12" N-Male to MC jumper, going to an Orinoco USB client...

This pic really gives you an idea of how short the coax run is...

I currently have a long usb cable going to the passenger seat where I have my Toshiba laptop. But the USB adapter has given me nothing but problems... So I recently aquired a Dell C600 (750Mhz) motherboard that I put 256mb ram and a 6Gb laptop HD into... Its kind of a whole little integrated module thing and pretty well sealed up, I am going to be making a custom enclosure for it with some extra cooling and a DC>DC adapter to run it straight off of the 12V car power (there is existing power in the trunk for my existing inverter and sub). So I can just drop an Orinoco Gold PCMCIA card into the laptop and run it to the existing small coax jumper (have you noticed my hatred twoards cable loss? ) and run all the VGA/USB/PS2/Serial to the front of the car via existing cables from my old carputer.

Next week I have a few days off during the week so I hope to be working on my vehicle, also i need to install my new mobile radio (110W Motorola VHF ).

I hope you like it and questions/comments are always welcome

Cool setup and very innovative. Just 1 suggestion. That exposed circuit board is just trouble waiting to happen. I'd get a anti-static bag and wrap it around that card with just an opening for your USB and coax. With the carpet against the back of that card you're gonna get a static build up and could possibly blow out your card or your USB port.

The carpet is kind of... molded I guess you could say? Either way, it does not touch the card. If I kind of bump the carpet I can feel it, but I guess if it moved around there is a possibility of it touching the carpet... But anywho that card isn't going to be there very long, I hope to have the C600 board installed in it's place by this weekend

The Dell is sitting on my desk hooked up to a monitor and running netstumbler, I setup a peer-to-peer so that it is constantly getting "new" access points and gps data from my Garmin GPS V (forgot to mention it!).

I want to let it run for a while, because the big issue I had was with the card just no longer responding or NetStumbler just hanging, with the USB client or the PCMCIA card, on my Toshiba laptop that I usually just use for gaming and my actuall Dell C600 laptop which I usually used for stumbling and playing MP3's through my car stereo, hey 7 hours with dual batteries

Also I live in Miami, with 90%+ humidity daily, static is not a part of our daily lives

Except for the flashes that light up the sky, followed by that real loud rumbling sound.

Damn, I wish we had those conditions. On bad days around here, I can zap a doorknob from across the room.
