I did a few hours of war walking yesterday for the first time and ran into a few expected problems...I didn't have any easy answers and searching the forums did not come up with any answers, yet (if there is a thread I missed, please post it).

I have a sleeve in my backpack which is probably originally designed for a camelback, anyways, it works perfectly for my Dell laptop. I picked up 200+ APs in less than an hour browsing through the "new" Seattle Public Library.

Anyways, quite expectedly, the laptop got pretty warm, as the sleeve doesn't really allow much room for cooling. Also, the fan is on the bottom end of the sleeve. I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problems, and if so, what were you able to do to remedy the situation?

Are you stumbling with an Ipaq or laptop?

Thanks, I was trying to find a similar thread instead of starting a new one, I appreciate the advice...

I am using a laptop, a Dell Inspiron 4100 running Windows XP Pro and FC3...

My initial thought is that there is probably little to nothing that can be done except to not stumble for too long...

Well if you know how to sew, or know someone that can, get you a black football jersey and make a mesh panel in the sleeve where the fan is.

Some models of Dell's are known to over heat. There's been several articles about it.

Just a quick search, but I bet there's probably more about it

I am thinking that overheating *in general* is not a problem, as I have used this laptop for two years with no heat problems...I am pretty sure it is due to the lack of airflow while in the backpack.

Now that sounds like a good start. It would also give me the option of getting the GPS hooked up to the serial port, which I can't do now because the sleeve is too tight to allow any connections to the back of the laptop...

I shall have to pursue this idea further...

The ram in my 600m overheats. I have to have the cover off the ram, the window open, and the ceiling fan on in my room on in the middle of winter to keep it running when I am playing Medal of Honor! F**king cold in here!

They make heatsinks for ram you know. I'd also look into another fan, or four....

Haven't seen one that would work for this. I got a laptop cooler... It didn't do anything! The cooler has 2 fans in it...

I have a laptop cooler for my Gateway that gets hot and it works well. Which one did you get? Mine's the Antec.

It's this clear plexiglass thing, with a big metal heatsink on top. There is a big fan in the middle, one on the side for the CPU. Runs off USB or 12V. Don't know who makes it. The ram cover will burn you if you touch it w/o the cooler on it!

Yeah there were reports of dells toasting people's balls. Especially in the Lattitude series. The Antec that I have works well.
