The Ideal Wardriving Setup?

Right now this is purely theoretical, and i'll probibly post a gif of the setup later, but for now how does this sound for the ultimate wardriving setup for under $500...

Orinoco gold card (~2.2db)
500mw booster (~27db)
7dbi magnetic mount (~7db)

100w power inverter (for both the laptop and the 500mw booster)
dell latitude cpi 400mhz (it's slow, but does the job)

generic USB gps unit (used only for wardriving and mapping with a laptop I.E. no screen on the unit so they only cost like $60 on ebay)

then just the cabling from card/booster and booster/antenna

With the cost of the laptop included it works out to be $720 for a 36db (4 watt, max allowed by FCC) wardriving setup that only has the little 7dbi antenna visible.

(without the laptop, it's about $420)

so...whadda think? (keeping in mind, this is still theoretical)

You don't want to use an amp. Your maps will come out waaay off.

Check Chris's Defcon presentation.

any help on which file in the presentation the info on the amplifier is in (i'm still looking through all the files trying to find it).

Also, there was a post a while back about a college kid who was making a program that produced maps which showed the coverage area of an access point (using an areial photo). They looked really good because they had different colors for the signal streighth, and that would show the location of the AP by means of driving around it, and mapping out the signal streingth.

I believe that this would negate the inaccuracy of the maps, unless of course the amplifier was constantly changing the output (due to low quality electronics).

Unfortunately, i cannot remeber where the thread was, or even if the kid actually finished the program.

But I still dont think it would be too bad because doesn't netstumber use the most powerful signal location to map the point anyway? All you would need to do is drive around the AP for a minute or two, and netstumbler would map the most powerful signal as the AP.

But I still want to read what chris said in his presentation.

If you use an amplifier, NS will see APs blocks or even miles away from where the AP actually is. Your maps will not be acurate. You will have APs showing up in the middle of lakes or cornfields.

Make-believe scenario:

You are heading north on Fucktard Blvd. You pick up and AP of an WISP while at the corner of Fucktard Blvd and Mongoloid Ln. The AP is actually high up on a tower over a mile away to the east. Normally, it wouldn't show up but since you have an amp, it gets detected. You immediately turn west onto Mongoloid, moving out of range of the AP. Going by the strongest signal, the AP is placed on your map incorrectly at the corner of Fucktard and Mongoloid. It's off by almost a MILE.

I thought there was something about this subject in Chris's presentation. After checking it, I was wrong. This issue came up during one of the DEFCON wardrives.
