I'm a blasphemous freak
I didn't find very much with my cantenna and netstumbler, so I made a suction cup mount 9 db omni for use on my car roof.... and went redhat.
My wardriving setup: omni antenna in a PVC mounting structure w/ suction cups 5' pigtail orinoco gold P4m 1.7ghz w/ 384MB RAM Redhat 8.0 Kismet 2.6.2 **OMG** And I can testify that this setup kicks the tar out of a cantenna on the inside of the car with netstumbler. I made the same loop with kismet and netstumbler on the above setup with win2k and redhat. Under win2k the orinoco card would constantly lock up and just stop picking up. Had to insert and reinsert all the time. Made a loop around town, and a few main roads through it. I got 27 AP's. I rebooted with redhat and made the same run with kismet. 112 AP's. With netstumbler and a cantenna I got 15 AP's on the same run. I didn't use the cantenna with kismet. My only issue is that I can't get my GPS to work in linux, and I don't have the pretty interface that NS has... or MS mappoint to work with. but for pure detection, rfmon mode rules the earth! Now I need a PDA so I can warwalk. Also, its very nice to be able to run ethereal, airsnort, and kismet all at the same time, all on the same screen. ![]() My biggest ++ for the linux system is that the orinoco does not lock up EVAR. I made a run to TN from KY with my new setup, got 158 AP's, same run one month ago with NS and cantenna got an extremely meager 20 APs (three of them my own) I must say that recieve only detection is the shiznit. maybe NS will support it soon? I'd like to go back to 'doze and NS for the pretty interfaces and progs, but I have seen the APs and don't want to go back. heh. |

What version of XP are you running?
Check out proxim for driver updates and firmware updates. There is a version of XP out that needs an upgrade patch, which is available there, that helps out with netstumbler.
XP determines the "best" driver, when there are updates in software that have enhanced Orinoco performance while stumbling. Some software was out long before xp was created, so you may need to upgrade both. See the Query link at the top of the page. |

Try this
Document 3247
Q: How do I install an ORiNOCO PC Card in Windows XP? A: The ORiNOCO PC Card drivers are included with the Windows XP Operating System. The original Windows XP version 5.1, build 2600, contains ORiNOCO driver version 7.14. Assuming your hardware is functioning directly, Windows XP will automatically load this driver. This driver works, but should be upgraded to version 7.16 using the Windows driver update feature." |

The first one (27 for netstumbler and over one hundred for kismet) was running the same omni, on the same day, in the same two hour period. merely a reboot between them.... and a lot of eject and reinserts for the windows setup.
![]() I'm sold on the linux rig. |

You're certainly going to see more APs under rfmon mode. NS won't see anything that doesn't respond to probe requests, but Kismet just needs to sniff one packet and bingo! Blasphemous? No, it's just a different technique.
