It's getting there

My current setup is:
  • Old Compaq Presario 1220 Notebook - Cyrix 200MHz with 80MB RAM and 2GB HD running WinME. (Yes, I know this is OLD)
  • Lucent branded ORiNOCO Silver card
  • Tripp-Lite PowerVerter 300
  • Garmin Etrex GPS w/ Data Cable (just won on Ebay)
All I have to do now is break down and buy my omni and pigtail, just trying to findout if I can pick up my order from Fab Corp as they are only 20 miles up the road.

The 5dBi omni will replace the 10dBi omni I had inside the truck. (10dBi was a loaner that I have to return tomorrow. Hopefully the 5dBi mounted outside will not be much lower in strength.)

Please, let's not beat this particular horse again. It is already dead, several time over. Debating the merits or deficits of a particlar OS proves nothing. And it serves no purpose other than to elevate the blood pressure of the various debaters.

And before you start flaming me, I've seen and used a variety of OS' in the last thirty years; on everything from micros to mainframes. So many I've lost count. They all have good and bad points. NONE, repeat NONE, is perfect.

TF,
Sound like a nice rig. Good luck with it.

Fair enough, it is poor.

I just didn't want to see that particular flameware start again. It's been on here at least 4 times that I can recall in the last 11 months.

not trying to bash any OS, but WinME seems to have lots more problem re the orinoco drivers & NS than Win9x and W2K/XP. don't have any experience w/ NT4 and wireless so i can't comment on that one.

i have noticed that as a stand alone system, No network interaction and dial up only with stardard apps and hardware it seems to be fine... But when you get I.E. 6 with citrix connection and launching becomes a nightmare, as well as blue screening every 5th logon to the network no matter what i did different. Programs dont work and microsoft seems to just let it go and focus more on XP... I do have to say i love XP, 2000, 98se. I have never been a fan of redhat but use it occ. Every Os does good things and both bad... i just have seen more bad with ME then good.

WinME

Trust me, WinME was by no means my first choice. Now granted I've not had any problems with it as of now (knocks on the wooden desk) but with a Cyrix 200MHz processor, 80MB RAM and only a 2GB hard drive I would be hard pressed to try and run W2K or XP along with NS and MapPoint all at once. I'm considering a deal from someone at work for an Acer TravelMate Celeron/700MHz notebook with 64MB (would upgrade) and a 10GB drive & W2K, still not state of the art, but at least it would be alot faster and have a ton more drive space.

Any feedback on Acer units? Years ago when I had to support their products their Tech Support was the pits, not sure if it has changed.

Lightbulb try 98?

Thunderforge,
ever think of puttin 98 or 2k on it?
i know win 2k sounds kinds big, but i've seen it run pretty damn good on a really crappy machine (compaq P133 64MB ram and 2gig HD) runs pretty fast and would do good for NS and mappoint. too bad its a desktop.. but even 98 would be more stable..

RAMBO
as for the Acer, they are good machines, but who needs tech support when you have the Netstumbler forums! support would be even better if blackwave came back

It was originally running W95. I wanted to go to 98, but didnt have it so I went to ME. I'd like to run 2K but even 2K Home wants 128MB RAM minimum and half my hard drive. That would mean having to pull off Office as well, which I may do, but that makes it a Stumbling only machine if all I can get on it is the OS and MapPoint.

My concern about Acer's support was more as a reflection on their quality as a whole, more so as it reflects on the stability of the hardware as opposed to actually getting help from them. I don't have a good long distance dialing plan anyways.

Yea you can run 2k on less then 128, mind you it will run alot faster on 128 but you dont have to install everything and you can get by with i think about 700meg. thats a cut down thou

wow, u don't have a copy of 98? i thought everyone had a copy of that by now!
if you still want it i think i could put my ISO of the 98upgrade disk somewhere like FTP or kazaa or something (almost same as full, just if u install on a fresh disk, it will ask for the 95 full disk, got that too )

It' may all be a moot point. I'm looking at getting a new notebook, so I should be able to get one running W2K or XP. Any recommendations on which is the better route to go?
