I just got a laptop on order, so I decided that I'll have some fun wardriving it once it arrives. I just ordered all the wardriving tools also. Here are the specs, please let me know if you have any comments on what I chose.

Im using

Acer Aspire 1660
3.0GHz P4
1GB Ram
60BG HDD
Triple-boot partition : WinXp (work) Winxp(driving), RedHat 9 (driving)
Knoppix STD
Phlak v.2
Orinoco gold w/ 5dbi omni-direction antenna
Dell TrueMobile USB 1300

Surprisingly, the builtin wireless is pretty powerful and picks up very faint signals.

Here's a setup ready for penetration

Notebook config
HP pavilion xh176
P3 700mhz
60gb hdd
384mb
XPsp1, 2ksp4 and Redhat Linux
HP Auto/Airline 12vdc to 19vdc
Mounting consist of a 1" thick x 14" x 14" square foam pad which the notebook sits on in the passenger seat. For high speed wardriving I us an optional anti skid pad (like the ones for rugs on hardwood floors) between the foam and leather seat. You might also consider using a small nylon strap to tie it down with if you tend to forget you're driving while fiddling with the notebook.

GPS config
Magellan 2000XL
Modified internally by adding 12vdc to 6vdc regulator and serial data cable

Wireless config
TI based noname 54g cardbus adapter
Zydas based USB/54g dongle attached to a 9' USB ext cable and using a Trojan condom (size small) as a weather shield. Which is then strapped with Velcro to the luggage rack of my 4yr old Navigator.

Hey don't laugh, My dongle setup cost me $20 for the usb/54g + $5 usb cable + $2 for a 6pk of condoms.
On my first test run from house to office and back which is 4.8miles total, I acquired 357 APs of which 223 were potential targets.
I was totally amazed. I had no idea that many people had wireless networks in such a small area.

You know me, I've got a healthy dose of paranoia with regards to the postings from people here, but I do think Scruge is on the level.

Dutch thanks for the support.

I'm to old and have way to many other interest to screw with peoples networks. Actually I just stumbled into this forum trying to find a better client utility for my own wireless network. Being that I already had my car setup with notebook and GPS "Street Atlas" it was a simple enough task to add the software and dongle and make a test wardrive. Now that I've satisfied my curiosity I'm on to the next project.

I've got 5 of the condoms left. Can you put them to good use? They are a bit small for me,

Sorry for the suspicion..

If they're too small for you, they're way to big for Dutch.
