Latitude X200
Yesterday I got my hands on the perfect laptop for my site surveying (and occasional wardriving), a Dell Latitude X200. This computer was replaced according to our reinvestment plan, the user got a brand new Latitude D610 instead (heavy).

The X200 weighs only 1,27 kg (<3 pounds) with a 12,1" screen, very nice form factor! It has a Dell TrueMobile 1150 minipci built in but I use my Proxim 8480-WD a/b/g for site surveying due to licensing regulations (AirMagnet Surveyor). OK, itīs only a P3 800MHz / 384MB RAM but hey, itīs for free I couldnīt just scrap it...

Less than 3 pounds....nice. My Inspiron weighs a fucking ton. Free shit is good shit, unless you're talking STD's.

A tablet pc is perfect for use with AirMagnet Surveyor because it has a touch screen.

Nice and light but where's the serial port? You have to attach the media base for that and now you're at 5lbs (2.38Kg)

I use a USB-serial adapter for connecting my Garmin Etrex when wardriving. The media base with DVD/CDR-W resides on my desk at the office.

The P3 in the x200, is that a mobile version ? How much battery time do you get on the box ?

Itīs a Pentium Mobile, what they call an "ultra low voltage processor" and has a passive cooler (no fan).

The battery is recently replaced so I get about 1 1/2h effective batterytime. Not much but thatīs often the backdraw when it comes to "ultra portable"... Maybe Iīll go for a converter or cig cabel.

I got me a toshiba portege 7200, pretty sweet for wardriving, got my old orinoco card in it. Dual booting windows2000 and Ubuntu.
Gotta work out a way to mount it in the car, and to get GPS in it.
To go completely offtopic What are peoples thoughts on a bluetooth GPS unit in a wardriving setup, you know interference, performance? As a bt one can be used in my pda and other devices...

Ok now I'm not so jealous. I get 2.5 hours on my 266Mhz.

Yeah, I know itīs a bit on the low side. The batterypack is really small! Batterytime enough for my site surveying (indoors), but for wardriving Iīd better go for some sort of 12V-adapter.

I never ment to make you jealous, not trying to rub it in so to speak.

Pentium M 2.0GHz, 1GB RAM, 100GB HDD, DVD-RW, Nvidia GeForce Go, 802.11a/b/g, BT and a lot more goodies!

Got it today, sweet... Tried out the graphics with COD2, great! Fast, slick and huge "hip factor" I´m impressed. Have yet to try it with AirMagnet Surveyor, should be a treat with the touch screen (wich really isn´t touch sensitive but rather sort of electromagnetic) Tablet PC is better than I had hoped for.
