My first real "war-drive"

Today, was my first real wardrive. Before, i was limited to walking around, and putting myself on top of parking structures. Today i had all my gear (gold card(firmware +mac hacked), laptop, GPS) in the front seat, plugged into the cig lighter. I drove around, picking up APs left and right. The area where I like is the upper middle class, so its alot of ppl, that dont use encryption, with broadband. I got about 35 networks, that was like a 1/2hr drive. Next time, im gonna get map point to track my drive, and plan it out on a map, so i cover everything. I have a couple of pringles cans, but those are used for more one-on-one action. The only snag in all of this is my GPS didnt accquire immediately, it took like 10 mins from power up to accqusition of satilate. All in all, it was pretty cool!

Good for you Wintermute.

Regarding the GPS: Many times, it is better to turn it on outside. They tend to aquire the satellite signal faster that way. At least that has been my experience.

BTW, do you have a twin named Neuromancer?

was it the first time you ever used the GPS? if so that usually takes a while because when you move a GPS a few hundred miles or turn one on that has been off for a long time it will need to figure out where the satellites are in the sky. also make sure you have an unobstructed view of the sky. what kind of GPS is it?

No, ive used it alot before. I dont have it in front of me right now, but its one of the lower cost GPS units. its actually on loan from the science dept at my school, and the teach wants it back for summer school, so im gonna have to part with it for a month.

no, he is actually one of my worst enemies. read the book for all the facts

I also have noticed this correlation. In my SoCal OC drives such differences can easily be noticed by crossing visible boundaries... the same boundaries one usually makes sure the door is locked.

i think it's funny how, once you see how it works, you can just look at a neighborhood and guess what kind of results you'll get... upper-class old-money? not many... upper class new money? lot's of AP's, lot's of WEP... middle class? some AP's, rarely WEP. of course, this is all subject to broadband availability as well.... now, would it be better to chose a location to live that has more networks or less networks?

Simple... just as IRL, that would most certainly depend on the promiscuity of ones interface
