It isn't the GPS unit alone that may cause any type of further questioning... but it would most probably be the cables from the GPS to a laptop/handheld, connected to an antenna, connected to the vehicles power supply, and perhaps the constant sound emitting from the pc speaker "RED ALERT"

To Dave Joyce:

I would like to know which legal documents you carry around while NetStumbling. Please, if possible, ZIP or RAR it and upload it to the message board, or host them somewhere. I would like these as backup.

Its a GPS, Sir...

GPS and computer connected and connected to the vehicles power supply could be taken as someone just using the GPS receiver to make their Delorme map application to work...

The .wav files though...

I know being able to look over at the 15.7 inch screen showing the map is easier than trying to read the handheld screen while driving. Haven't gotten in an accident yet!

That seems to make sense if the driver looks like Clark Kent...

um not to be a sour puss but who cares.

The situation posed is totaly unreal. Stumbling isnt a crime YET if and when it ever becomes a crime it most likely wont even be enforced due to its technical nature.

What sit? A stumbler gets pulled over. A LEO sees all the things, and asks what they are doing. Seems pretty real to me... Also depending where one is, the LEO may not fully understand what is going on and get weird, especially if the town is quite, you may get 4 or 5 crownvics roll up and start poking around...

Run comfoolery. Run MapPoint/StreetAtlas/etc. "Just playing with my new GPS officer. Trying to see how accurate it really is." <show cop the map>

Piece o' cake.

Post First off...

Okay, First off, Hams across america drive around with full on ant farms on thier cars and get away with it without issue.

So if a cop is gonna pull you over, he will have a reason,
IE: being on private property, driving badly, breaking some law.

When pulled over, comply as needed, but realize that the cop doesnt have to know what you were doing and You do not have to explain it to him. The laptop and its connecting gear are not related to anything he needs to worry about. Simply provide him with basic data as needed.

What that on yoru seat?
a Laptop
Whats all that connected to the laptop?
just my computer gear.
Whats it doing?
Nothing.

If the cop keeps asking questions he can then simply remove your license and hold it out to him, while asking what he was pulling you over for. you might be more likely to get a ticket, but odds were good that you woudl have anyway...

Not true all the time. Check with IAD-LAPD.

LEO's are not too happy if they find out you are not telling them the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Truth being the fact of what is, and not the perception of what you want the truth to be. Deception is not good, especially if SE skills are low.

Have your DL, registration, and insurance card ready, but do not hand prematurely. Also LEO's like to write notes on your registration that most people do not notice, such as warnings.. This is one method they know if you have already been warned a couple of times for something.

It is best to have a notepad and a pen handy for taking down notes, badge numbers, name if the LEO does not appear to be following protocol.

Cooperate with the LEO fully, no matter what. Remember that you have a camera on you at all times and a microphone is recording all you say.

Note: this is for information and educational purposes only.

actually they're not allowed to go through anything electronic either, even a PDA much less a laptop, even if it's unsecured. i was thinking about locking my screen while stumbling and reminding anybody who questions that opening locked containers in a car is illegal without a warrant, but then i remembered the electronic information storage part.
