My setup.
First of all I would have to say this is more of enthusiast setup and doesn't really hold a candle to most of what everyone else has.
Computer: Sony Vaio PCG-FR130 AMD XP 2000+ 768mb RAM (for now) 40gb Hitachi hard disk. WinXP SP2 (I'd run FreeBSD, but with the amount of time I have spent getting XP running perfect, it would be a shame to loose it) Senao NL-2511 CD Plus 802.1b card(The weeny with the integrated PCB antenna) Microsoft MN-720 802.11g card(I wish death to this card but my parents thought it would be a good Christmas gift for me, so I humor them and use it now and then) Car: 1993 Audi 90 CS 2.8L V6 Swanky heated leather I'd really like to get a more powerful setup, though I am a poor college student, and all the money I amass usually goes to paying off something of fixing something. Does it do what you need it to? Looks like a good setup to me. BTW what is growing on the top of your car? |

Finally a decent (very large so dial up beware) pictures of my setup.
The car picture was taken from my friends room because I was to lazy to go outside, but you can still see the antenna on it. http://server.red-sec.org/~tony/mobile/card.JPG http://server.red-sec.org/~tony/mobile/antenna.JPG http://server.red-sec.org/~tony/mobile/car.JPG |

Dude, that's probably the best looking antenna attachment setups I've seen! I always think of sony like apple. Really good quality, so you stick with the brand, but just propriatary enough that you can't find parts easy... Cool setup.

In considering war driving I would drop the car completly for several reasons.
1- You consume too much gas. 2- Driving slow to pickup networks gets you yelled at by other drivers. 3- If you slow down to inspect a network you get stared at like your about to commit a drive by shooting ( or looking to buy drugs ). I just see the car as getting in the way and causing more problems. I read and article in 2600 that one fellow used a kyack in a Dell handheld to map out points along a bay. That guy has guts, I mean one flip and you can kiss that PDA goodbye. What I was thinking of using was one of those senior citizen bikes ( yeah with the three wheels and the basket in back) . Now before you start laughing your ass off let me explain the reasons why. I am fixing up one some old fart chucked out in the trash. I found on E-bay a kit to motorize one of these things (ebay search "48cc" ) so it would technically classify it as a moped. The State of Florida like most other states legally describes a moped as any 2 or 3 wheeled human powered bike that has less than 50cc of eingine, can not exceed 30mph, and does not have any gears other than a clutch to engage and dis-engage the motor. Yeah you have to register it but you are allowed to ride it on the sidewalk if you peddle it and you can run it on the streets as long as you keep to the side. In the basket I would have a marine grade deep cycle 12volt batttery charged by a motorcycle alternator hooked up to the rear axle. Then I would get an adapter to convert 12V to 16V to run my vaio (pcg-N505ve). I would get somthing like a front basket to hold on to the notebook. I could mount the GPS puck and antennas easily on the frame. Yeah I might look like a freak but as I roam thru a neighborhood I would appear alot less threating than someone driving thru in a 93 Explorer. Plus I could park for free and park on the sidewalks. I live in south florida I have no winter to worry about so I would not need heated seats, Alot of people run wireless in gated communitys ( which never stop bikes or mopeds just cars ), gated communites and other affulent communities uasually are packed with routers. Suggestions? comments?? |

2- I don't slow down. You should'nt have to unless your connecting and we won't mention what happens if you try to.... 3 - Again, why are you slowing down? Quote:

If your truely worried about missing AP's there's nothing to say you can't run multiple antennas and cover every angle. I'm running 2 directionals out the sides and 2 omni's on my roof. There's not much I miss. yup, I'm bored at work and responding to everything

2. Driving freeway speeds (70MPH) seems to work just fine... 3. What do you mean "slow down to inspect a network"? As for the fella in the kayak. Do you think he may have had one of these? "Suggestions? comments??" Yeah, you're an idiot! |
