My upcoming setup!

Just getting into wardriving, toys are on the way!

Sager 5650
P4-mobile 1.6Ghz
512Mb DDR (1 dimm)
7500 64DDR
20GB HDD
Orinoco Gold
Dual batteries

w00t! I'm excited!

Now, what can I use for cheap GPS? I like those Sapphire Mouse ones, but they seem kinda pricey....

My suggestion would be your Garmin eTrex Basic (Yellow). I have the Garmin eTrex Legend and paid too much for something I will never get the full use of. Which OSes do you plan to use?

Well, I was thinking a dual boot of XP and some flavor of lunix... might just stick with XP, as I seem to be strangely addicted to cleartype!

What kind of connectivity has that Garmin got? I think I will be lacking a RS232...

I'd recommend the Etrex Yellow as well it's what I have and was able to get it for $89 on e-bay including a serial data cable. I picked up an iConcepts USB to Serial PDA converter and it works fine under XP. I'd suggest a combo data/power cable though as the etrex can suck those batteries dry in a heartbeat.

I second what Thunderforge said about the drainage... they get sucked down FAST!... sometimes on a stumbling trip around town i have to change the batteries... that was before I got my data+power cable:
010-10268-00 PC interface cable with cigarette lighter $50.00
http://shop.garmin.com/accessory.jsp...0%2D10268%2D00
Quote:
This cable allows you to make a powerful connection between your GPS and your PC. Create routes and waypoints on your PC and transfer them to your GPS. You can also download map detail from MapSource CD-ROMs to compatible units. Cable features a standard 9-pin D connector. Connects to any 12-volt receptacle
While you are shopping I also suggest:
010-10361-00 Automotive Windshield Mounting Bracket $31.80
http://shop.garmin.com/accessory.jsp...0%2D10361%2D00
Quote:
Got a funky, contoured dash that won't allow you to mount your eTrex level? Solution: suction cup mount. Stick mount to the inside of the windshield or window and snap eTrex into place. Bracket is jointed, so you can adjust to your heart's content and get the unit out of direct sunlight

You can also often find these cables on eBay starting at a bid price of about $15. They usually close around $25. They are sold by some company with a huge 2000+ rating.

You could try out the Prolific USB to Serial converter. Works like a charm in Win2k and my boss says it works well on XP (with the latest drivers)

I bought the iConcepts USB to Serial PDA converter at CompUSelessA and it works great under XP. I still need to find a way to get MP2k2 and NS to use the same GPS feed though. Comfoolery/Device Mgr causes timeouts.

I recommend the pfranc combo. The power injecter in seperate so you still have a regular serial cable without a light plug hanging off of it. And it's $15.00 cheaper.

BTW the connector on mine is thin and purple and locks into place unlike the one shown above, so I think they've done an update. I got mine from the guy in oregon. I recommend asking first to make sure you get the same kind.

Also check out http://pfranc.com/cgi-bin/P/eUSB1

which can be modded to supply power too http://pfranc.com/usb/etrex.htm.

Muahahahaa!!!

I just ordered a Garmin eTrex Basic, AND won two auctions, one for a combo power/data cable, the other for a serial to USB converter....

I've seen the combo cables for up to $50, got mine for $24.50, and I've seen those USB adapters for $30, got mine for $14.00!

WOOT!
