I second blackwave's choice of the Garmin eTrex line...I have the eTrex Vista(the really expensive one), which i've taken on a number of trips.

Its proven itself outside while hiking(banged it into the side of a mountain in the catskills, now it has a scratch on the side of it, but still works). They are waterproof too. Tough lil unit.

Works fine for stumbling...just get a usb serial port if you dont have serial...

What do you mean? GPSes don't run Windows and they output serial data.
