Can you please type like a big boy first. Then maybe some more people would be more helpful. The end of sentences come with one (1) period not three (3) of them. Cheap is the correct spelling for "cheep".

(And if I wanted to be extra picky, I'd tell you to try to capitalize the words that come at the beginning of a sentence.)

(And if you think I'm an asshole, sure. It's 3am and I can't sleep so I figured being an asshole would make me go to bed faster knowing somebody wants me to die.)

Split to it's own thread.

No one laughed at you. It was just plainly stated "That just won't work, it's the wrong card."

To make kismet run, you should really go over to the kismet forums, and read through the documentation. Briefly however, what you will need to do is download the kismet source code files and driver souce code files. You will need to compile and then install them.

If you're unsure of that whole process (many people new to *nix are not), you may want to look through some forum(s) devoted to Linux beginers. There are a lot of HOWTOs out there to walk you through it.

If all that is too daunting just to try kismet to see if you will like it, then you might want to download a bootable CD that has kismet on board. Auditor and WHAX are two of my favorites. Both have kismet as part of the CD. Both will run kismet "right out of the box" as long as you have the card plugged into the laptop.

Thorn. I will have a look on more forums but I panic as to where I have to unpack things.
Any Idea on where I can source the cheep Pigtails?

Congrats on the new baby. Your life won't be the same for the next 20 years or so.

We STRONGLY encourage use of correct English, spelling, etc. on these forums. This is plainly stated in the the Welcome Desk. (You read through all of that, right?) Repeatedly failing to due so will draw the ire and flames from the regulars, and the moderators will ultimately dump your posts in the Bin.

If unpacking source files causes a panic, then I would really suggest that you first try a Live CD like WHAX. Nothing could be simpler: a) Download the CD image. b) Burn to the CD. c) Boot. d) You're running Linux. Select kismet from the menu, and watch the networks be detected.

Once you decide you like it, then find a beginner's forum for Linux and read up what it take to install packages. None of it is that hard, but it is completely different from MS products.

Cheap pigtails are all over. For those in the UK, I'd suggest ComputerGuy. FAB-Corp also ships internationally.

Thanks for the help. I am currently down loading WHAX 3.0. The Computer Guy link has got a great link for a cantenna kit.
I will be looking up meetings of linux clubs and get someone to sit me down and explain to me how to install Tars etc. (I am Based in Central London).
As I learn about things I will post it on my website. A) So I don't forget. B) So I can help others who are in a simular position as me.
Thank you

Congratulations on the kid. Sounds like one of my finals weeks at college will adequately prepare me for those kind of sleepless nights (OK - You people that have had kids, back off! It was a joke! There's now a Non-Parental secret service line 500 miles back there! )

Just wait till they're in the carseat on the way to daycare and projectile vomit twice before you can pull over. Yep, it was a fun morning. 3 more times today and counting.

Or they decide that you should be giving them attention and slam your notebook display down on the keyboard, thus breaking the hinge detent and now you gotta use a bent piece of plexi to hold your dispaly up.

I haven't had that yet, but I caught the grandson chewing on my Razr. It dripped drool for a day and fried something inside. Oh well - now I have the black Razr and an excuse to trade up to either a Treo or an iPaq 6515.

Once you get a feel for Linux and the command line. I would suggest installing a something like the Ubuntu distribution of Linux. It's about the most user friendly version and the forums are quite active.

In the Ubuntu Wiki you'll find a howto on gettinginstalling Kismet , patching the kernel, etc.

Since I tend to treat Linux folks nicely, when you get to GPSD search the forum here for Dutch's post on GPSD it contains a link to version 1.10 of GPSD, it's the most stable version when used with Kismet. When Kismet Newcore is released then you can upgrade GPSD to a 2.x version.

Beakmyn, have you tried pcbsd? its a bsd distro based on freebsd 6.0.

For clients who need an internet station, email, browser and an office clone setup, you cannot beat this.
